What is NBN?

The government-owned National Broadband Network is being rolled out to provide Australians with access to a reliable broadband connection. How does the NBN affect your business?

If your business is an an NBN-enabled area and you are still running on copper services you will need to migrate your services to NBN before the final cancellation date for your area. Otherwise you risk having your services disconnected as part of the NBN mandatory disconnects.

Types of NBN

The nbn™ network uses different kinds of technology in different locations. If the nbn™ network is already on at your address, check below to work out what kind of technology connects you. If the nbn™ network hasn’t rolled out in your area yet, call us on 1800 834 273 or check the NBN rollout map to find out what type of technology you can expect at your place.

Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)

Fibre optic cable delivers phone and internet to your home or business. Look for:

an NBN Utility Box attached outside your premises which leads to
an NBN Connection Box inside your premises;
a power supply/battery back-up (in some instances).

Fibre to the Building (FTTB)

Fibre optic cable runs to your building, then existing copper cables within your building runs to your unit or apartment. There is no internal NBN equipment.

Good to know

or 18 months after the nbn™ network is in your area, FTTB connections will co-exist with existing services that are yet to complete their switch to the nbn™ network. Once the co-existence period is over, you may notice an increase in speed and stability of your nbn™ network connection.
If you’re in an FTTB area and you want multiple providers for your phone and/or internet services, you’ll need to have a separate line installed for each service.

Fibre to the Node (FTTN)

Fibre optic cable runs to central location (node) then uses existing copper lines to your home or business. There is no NBN equipment inside your house.

Good to know

For 18 months after the nbn™ network is in your area, FTTN connections will co-exist with existing services that are yet to complete their switch to the nbn™ network. Once the co-existence period is over, you may notice an increase in speed and stability of your nbn™ network connection.
If you’re in an FTTN area and you want multiple providers for your phone and/or internet services, you’ll need to have a separate line installed for each service.

Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC)

Fibre optic cable runs to a fibre node in your street, then coaxial cables run to your home or business. Look for:

an HFC Utility Box attached outside your premises;
a coaxial wall socket inside your premises;
a splitter (in some cases),
an NBN Connection Box

Good to know

If you’re in an HFC area and you want multiple providers for your phone and/or internet services, you’ll need to have a separate connection installed for each service.

Fixed Wireless (FW)

A local NBN Fixed Wireless tower sends a signal to a fixed antenna attached outside your premises, then internal wiring runs to your NBN Connection Box inside. Look for:

an NBN Antenna outside your premises;
an NBN Connection Box inside your premises;

Good to know

For Fixed Wireless, an NBN co technician must perform a test to find out if your property can receive an adequate signal. If not, we’ll discuss other options with you.
If you are in an NBN Fixed Wireless area, it is not mandatory to switch to the nbn™ network.

Sky Muster™

Telstra does not currently offer services on NBN Sky Muster™ satellite. If you are in a Sky Muster™ area, we can discuss alternative internet connection options with you.
